Man Puts Tracking Device On Car: Hinsdale Cops

The 78-year-old man was seen lying underneath a car, police say.

HINSDALE, IL — A 78-year-old man was seen last month putting a tracking device on a car outside a clinic, police said.

About 10:30 a.m. Feb. 22, police were called about a man laying underneath a parked car at Amita Health Medical Group Family Medicine Hinsdale, 911 N. Elm St, according to a report. Police said they discovered an unauthorized tracking device on the car and notified the owner. Witnesses provided descriptions of the man, who police later identified as Bing R. Apitz.

Four days later, an arrest warrant was issued for Apitz, who was charged with the misdemeanor of unlawful use of an electronic tracking device. The DuPage County Sheriff's Office served it Monday. He was released on bond and given a date to appear in court. Apitz lives in Long Grove, where he owns a house assessed at more than $600,000, according to tax records.
