12-Year-Old Girl Shot Dead In Hazel Crest, Ruled Homicide

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office ruled Erica Gibson's death a homicide.

HAZEL CREST, IL — A 12-year-old Chicago girl was fatally shot in Hazel Crest over the weekend, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner, who ruled her death a homicide.

Hazel Crest police were dispatched to the 17600 block of Arlington Lane in Hazel Crest Saturday night, after receiving a call to tend to a gunshot victim, according to a news release from the Hazel Crest Police Department. Police said upon arrival, Erica Gibson, 12, of Chicago, was quickly transported to South Suburban Hospital where she was later pronounced dead around 10:53 p.m.

Gibson is reported to have died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the medical examiner's office. During an autopsy preformed Sunday, the medical examiner's office ruled the child's death a homicide, stating she died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Hazel Crest police said there will be no further details at this time, but said nobody is in custody, adding, "there is no danger to the public or the citizens of Hazel Crest related to this incident."

Police said upon investigating, more details will be provided if permitted.
