2 'Healthy Little Boys' Abandoned at South Suburban Fire Department
The young mother appeared overwhelmed with caring for the twin boys, believed to be between 6 and 12 months old.

PHOENIX, IL — Two boys believed to be twins are now in the hands of DCFS, after a young mother dropped them at a fire station, telling firefighters she "just couldn't do it anymore."
The woman knocked on the Phoenix fire station door around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, then handed over the boys estimated to be between 6 and 12 months old.
Firefighters described her as "emotional and distraught" as she surrendered the boys, both of them in car seats. They appeared to be healthy and were taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital per protocol.

The woman's decision is outside that permitted under the Safe Haven law, which allows parents to leave their babies — no questions asked — at a hospital, police or fire station within 30 days of the child's birth.
The fire chief applauded the woman's decision.

"I'm proud of her," Chief Mickil Smith told WGN. "I respect her decisions. I understand that we all go through trying times, and I am so happy that she made this decision, instead of making one that could have been a lot more costly to her, as well as those children."
