Abandoned Mama Dog and Puppies Now Fighting for Life at Suburban Shelter

Dogs were found neglected in a house after the owners moved out.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — A south suburban animal shelter is trying to save the lives of a dog and her litter of puppies discovered in a vacant house.

A cleaning crew found the emaciated Annie and her babies, apparently abandoned there after the homeowners had moved out. Two puppies were dead at the scene.

"Our hearts still get broken over and over and Annie is breaking our hearts right now," South Suburban Humane Society wrote on its Facebook page. "SSHS staff are doing everything in their power to save the rest and all we're asking is for you to send love and light to our Annie and her family."

Annie and the puppies made it through the night, but the smallest pup has been hospitalized due to severe dehydration and weakness. Annie is no longer producing milk due to her own state of neglect, so volunteers are hand-feeding the puppies with puppy formula.

The shelter is asking for formula or monetary donations to help with their care. To make a monetary donation, please click here to make a secure online donation or PayPal business@southsuburbanhumane.org.
