Aurelio’s Pizza Owner Condemns Controversial Sign
A sign at the Bourbonnais location regarding a lack of employees sparked controversy online. The owner denounced the message.

HOMEWOOD, IL — The owner of Aurelio’s Pizza is clearing up conversation surrounding a controversial sign posted at a location in the Village of Bourbonnais.
The pizza chain that originated in Homewood comprises 35 independently owned and operated franchise locations. The Homewood location is owned by the Aurelio family.
The sign stated, "Sadly, due to government handouts, no one wants to work anymore. Therefore, we are short staffed. Please be patient with the staff that did choose to come to work."

The sign sparked online discussion that lead to owner Joe Aurelio releasing a video response.
"When I was made aware of a sign posted in one of these locations, I had it removed immediately," Aurelio said. "The message did not reflect the beliefs of the Aurelio's Pizza brand, Aurelio's core values of serving quality food with friendly service, and dedication to your families in the communities we serve."

The owners of the Bourbonnais franchise told the Chicago Tribune that they regret posting the sign, adding that they did so out of frustration. The owners told the Tribune that they have not been able to hire enough staff members for the restaurant, and at times have had to deal with impatient customers.
