Communities Unite To Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
175th Street To Be Renamed In Country Club Hills & Hazel Crest

HAZEL CREST — Hazel Crest Village President Vernard Alsberry Jr. and Country Club Hills Mayor James W. Ford have announced that their village governments have agreed to honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by designating 175th Street in each of their towns as Honorary Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. 175th Street from extends from the Cicero Avenue to Central Park Avenue in Country Club Hills and from Central Park Avenue to Governors Highway in Hazel Crest.
Country Club Hills will approve a resolution authorizing the honor on January 25, 2021. The Village of Hazel Crest will be approving the resolution authorizing the honor on February 9, 2021.
To help comply with COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, Hazel Crest and Country Club Hills will host separate honorary renaming designation ceremonies attended by municipal and community leaders.

Both ceremonies will take place on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 10:00 AM. The Hazel Crest ceremony will be held at the intersection of 175th Street and East Carriageway. Country Club Hills will assemble at the intersection of 175th Street and Central Park Avenue for their ceremony.
“With the recent events in Washington, D.C., the uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and our continued fight for social justice, honoring the life and legacy of Reverend King reminds us that the power of light can overcome darkness and truth can overcome lies,” said Hazel Crest Mayor Alsberry.

“We honor the great service, sacrifice, exemplary achievements and legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. whose work was so instrumental to the civil rights movement,” said Country Club Hill Mayor Ford. “In recognition of February Black History Month, the City will rename 175th St. from Cicero to Central Avenue in Country Club Hills, in appreciation of the outstanding contribution of his civil right Leadership,” he said.
These events will comply with COVID-19 mitigation guidelines. Face coverings must be worn by all in attendance.
