Original story: LYNWOOD, IL —Crews reentered the frigid waters of a retention pond in Lynwood on Monday and continued the search for victims in a submerged car.

Police were called to the 3000 block of Lincoln Highway in Lynwood Sunday around 12:30 p.m. after a 911 call reporting that a car left the roadway and went into a sanitation district retention pond between Torrence Avenue and IL-83.

Crews searched for hours Sunday, finally spotting the car. The vehicle is reportedly buried in silt about 60-70 feet from where it entered the water, making it difficult for crews to latch onto and remove. Reduced visibility under the surface and silt up to the doors made the task of even spotting the license plate nearly impossible.

Divers on Sunday spent hours searching for the passengers, rotating shifts every 10 to 15 minutes. A local police officer and a diver were both treated for exposure. The search was suspended around 7 p.m.

Cook County Sheriff's Police are investigating the crash. Driving conditions were not dangerous at the time, police said. Conditions were clear and the roads were well-salted.
