HOMEWOOD, IL — First it was Hollywood Video. Then Blockbuster. On Tuesday, Family Video joined the former popular video store chains, after announcing its closure. The corporation said the decision comes after folding amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Family Video started up in 1978. After 42 years, over 250 stores are now closing. Illinois is currently home to 30 Family Video locations, including here in Homewood, located at 2000 W. 183rd St.

Highland Ventures LTD, owners of Family Video, said the corporation will be closing all remaining stores, after a dip in sales and less foot traffic due to the pandemic. Keith Hoogland, President of Family Video said he is proud of the corporation for lasting as long as it did, noting Blockbuster, Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video all closed prior to the pandemic.

"Today, I have to make the difficult announcement that we are closing all Family Video locations. The impact of COVID-19, not only in foot traffic, but also in the lack of movie releases, pushed us to the end of an era," Hoogland said on Tuesday.

The owner added, "I am extremely thankful to our employees and customers that were instrumental in Family Video's success. Without you, we would not have been the last man standing in our industry."
