Flossmoor Firefighter Honored with Award in Name of Fallen Firefighter

Aldric 'A.J.' Hinton, a Flossmoor firefighter, was given the Brian Carey Award for outstanding work during his training with Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 24.

The Flossmoor Fire Department's Aldric 'A.J.' Hinton was recently honored with the Brian Carey Award, after he graduated with 21 other fire fighters from the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 24. The award is named after fallen Homewood firefighter

“We operate a fire training academy out of the Brian Carey Training Academy in Homewood,” said Flossmoor Fire Captain Matthew Berk. “This class started last august and finished up in March, they pretty much spent that time learning to be firefighters.”

During the several month-long training program, Berk said that Hinton was the most outstanding member of his class and went above and beyond expectations.

“It's for the individual that stood out the most during the academia,” Berk said. “Brian Carey was killed in a fire in 2010 and what our division decided was, to honor him, by giving the most outstanding candidate the Brian Carey Award.”

For his part, Hinton said he was thrilled about receieving the award, which was made even more special because it was given to him by Carey's mother during the graduation ceremony.

“It was great honor to recieve an award like the Brian Carey, especially that his mom presented it to me," Hinton said. "I felt pretty good about that."
