GoFundMe Launched For Girl Killed By Gunfire In Hazel Crest

Erica Gibson, of Chicago, was fatally shot in the head over the weekend, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

HAZEL CREST, IL — Following the shooting death of a 12-year-old Chicago girl over the weekend, friends and family have launched a GoFundMe account to help pay for her funeral expenses.

"She was a bright 12 year old with a bright future ahead," posted Kamile Patterson, who organized the online fundraiser. "We are collecting to send her away 'princess style.' Please find it in your heart to donate whatever you can."

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the young, shooting victim as Erica Gibson earlier this week. Family members told ABC News 7 that Erica was staying at a friend’s house on Arlington Lane in Hazel Crest when the shooting took place Saturday night. She died from a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at South Suburban Hospital shortly before 11 p.m.

Investigators have not said who fired the fatal shot that took her life. However, Hazel Crest Police Chief Mitchell R. Davis III said in a statement Tuesday that no criminal charges will be filed against a juvenile involved.

"At this time, the investigation shows this to be another case of young people having access to an unsecured weapon in a home that had a tragic accident," Davis said.

While charges won't be filed against the juvenile, Erica's family recently told the Chicago Sun Times that the gun owner should be held responsible for what appears to be an accidental shooting.

“She didn’t have to go like that,” Tykeena McDonald, Erica's cousin, told the newspaper. “We could have still been here at my house or at her house just dancing and having fun together — now that’s all taken away because of a tragic accident.”

The Cook County State’s Attorney Office is currently reviewing the case to determine if the evidence supports any charges.

Erica's GoFundMe account has generated more than $2,300 as of Wednesday. Family and friends hope to raise at least $10,000. To donate, click here.
