HFHS Revamps Softball Field to Comply with Gender Equality Law

Following a complaint by Bob Carpenter to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, Homewood-Flossmoor High School will upgrade its girls softball field following the 2013 season.

Homewood-Flossmoor High School will improve or add amenities around the school's varsity softball field, including:

  • installing bleacher seating behind home plate,
  • building a press box,
  • installing a permanent electronic public address system and a concession stand

The upgrades are part of a Title IX agreement the school reached with complainant Bob Carpenter, who filed a Title IX complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, Sun-Times Media reports. Carpenter filed the complaint because he felt the school did not provide equal field conditions between girls softball and boys baseball.

The improvements to the field and the surrounding area will begin after the 2013 season, according to the report.
