Illinois STEAM Academy Hosting Spring Break STEM Camp

A day-long camp from April 2-6 at the Illinois STEAM Academy in Hazel Crest is geared toward students interested in STEM-related subjects.

HAZEL CREST, IL - There will be a STEM camp for children interested in STEM-related subjects during spring break for children ages 5 through 12 at the Illinois STEAM Academy in Hazel Crest. The camp, which will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. the week of April 2-6, is geared toward students who have a desire to explore robotics, coding, computer repair, math, and the arts. Entry is a $50 non-refundable registration fee and a $175 camp cost, according to a news release.

“This camp will ultimately enable youth to become innovative thinkers and problem solvers and foster an early interest in STEAM-related careers,” said Jeremiah Johnson, founder of the Illinois STEAM Academy, said.

Sixty scholarships that will cover the cost of the camp will be gifted to youth in underprivileged families. The scholarships will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

STEAM exposure, Johnson said, is sorely needed in some sectors of the Chicago metropolitan area.

“Within the past decade, there has been a surge in the science and technology sectors, but there haven’t been enough innovative professionals to drive the technology and the amount of change that is necessary,” he said. “As a result, many students reach post secondary education, only to find they are unequipped for the challenges of the science and technology fields. My sincerest desire is to use STEAM education to improve the innovation of tomorrow’s most influential people - our children.”
