No Charges To Be Filed In 12-Year-Old Erica Gibson's Death

HAZEL CREST, IL — No charges will be filed after 12-year-old Erica Gibson, of Chicago, was shot in the head over the weekend, dying from the bullet.
"The investigation by the Hazel Crest Police Department and the legal review by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office has determined no criminal charges will be filed against the juvenile involved," Chief of Police Mitchell R. Davis III said in a statement Tuesday. "At this time, the investigation shows this to be another case of young people having access to an unsecured weapon in a home that had a tragic accident. "
Hazel Crest police were dispatched to the 17600 block of Arlington Lane in Hazel Crest Saturday night, after receiving a call to tend to a gunshot victim, according to the Hazel Crest Police Department. Police found Erica Gibson shot in the head and quickly transported her to South Suburban Hospital where she was pronounced dead around 10:53 p.m.

The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled Gibson's death a homicide during an autopsy preformed Sunday.
Police added "there is no danger to the public or the citizens of Hazel Crest related to this incident."
