Obituary: Mary Joan Smith
An accomplished and self-taught artist in paints and watercolors, Mary Joan was also a creative and passionate baker.

Mary Joan Smith returned to eternal life on April 14 at the age of 88. A 60 year resident of Homewood, she was born in Alton Illinois and moved to various places throughout her childhood. Joan was very bright, graduating second in her high school class.
An accomplished and self-taught artist in paints and watercolors, she was also a creative and passionate baker.

One of her other loves was her career at Marshall Fields in Park Forest, where she distinguished herself selling fine fragrances. Joan was the recipient of numerous awards and industry gifts for her customer service.
She was preceded in death by her dear husband of over 50 years, Justin Francis, and her parents James and Marjorie G'Sell. She is survived by her children Barbara (Edward Gross) of Monee, Stephen of Oak Park, and Kurt of Homewood. Her sister Beverly Lanzrath (Clarence) of Henderson Nevada and cherished sister-in-law Gail Burns (late Joseph) of Lake Forest and numerous cousins in Indianapolis will miss her greatly.

In lieu of flowers, she requested memorials be directed to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
A private family funeral service was held due to the current Covid19 restrictions. Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetary in Elwood. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
