It appears Hardin was in the wrong place at the wrong time, shot by a man on the run after stealing and later crashing a car nearby. The suspect got out of that car and ran onto a viaduct, which led to Canadian National property. It's then the suspect encountered Hardin and shot him several times in the abdomen. He was taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m.

The suspect fled the scene and despite a manhunt by several area police departments, has not been located.
