12-Year-Old From Hyde Park Named Scholastic News Kid Reporter

Ava Gray is one of 45 young journalists who are part of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps this school year.

CHICAGO - A young journalist from the Hyde Park-Kenwood area is getting a unique opportunity as one of 45 kid reporters selected nationally to be part of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps during the 2018-19 school year. 12-year-old Ava Gray, a seventh grader, will work throughout the year with others between ages 10 and 14 to produce "news for kids, by kids" with coverage of current events, breaking news, entertainment stories, and sports events from their hometowns and on the national stage.

Kid reporter stories appear online at the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps website and in issues of Scholastic classroom magazines, which reaches more than 25 million students in classrooms nationwide according to a news release.

The annual selection of kid reporters is based on writing ability, interviewing skills and attention to detail. To become a kid reporter, Gray had to include a typed news article, essay that answered why she wanted to be a kid reporter and two story ideas for the community in her application packet.
