CHICAGO – University of Chicago police have alerted residents in the Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods of two similar incidents in which armed men approached victims walking on the sidewalk and robbed them. Two incidents with similar details were reported within blocks of each other over a two-hour span late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
First, two people walking on the sidewalk at 10:40 p.m. in the 5300 block of South Cornell Avenue were approached by the robbers, who University police say announced a robbery and took jackets, a wallet and a backpack. The thieves fled in a waiting vehicle that drove off northbound on Cornell.
Then, at 12:35 a.m., two armed men approached someone walking to a building between 51st and 52nd streets on Harper Avenue. In this incident, the robbers also announced a robbery and demanded the victim's jacket. But this time a witness intervened and the thieves fled to a waiting vehicle without taking any of the victim's property.
