Flood Forces Families Out Of Ronald McDonald House

All four floors of the Ronald McDonald House near Comer Children's Hospital flooded during the extreme cold last week.

CHICAGO - The Ronald McDonald House near the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in Hyde Park was evacuated last week after a pipe burst during the extremely cold weather that hit the entire Midwest. All four floors of the building were flooded, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, leaving the facility uninhabitable until repairs are made.

The Sun-Times reported that seven families were staying at the house at 5444 S. Drexel Ave. at the time of the flood and spoke to members of one family that was affected.

Families who reside at Ronald McDonald houses across the nation typically have a child who is hospitalized overnight for a significant amount of time.

An employee told Hyde Park Patch on Tuesday that the house near Comer will be run out of the Hyatt Place Hotel in Hyde Park until the repairs at the damaged facility are complete. A spokeswoman for the Ronald McDonald House says that could take anywhere from 2-4 months.

Donations in the form of money, food and transportation are needed. The Ronald McDonald House has a website with more information on how to donate.
