Hyde Park's Annual South Side Pie Challenge

A celebration of autumn and holiday pies.

The 2016 South Side Pie Challenge will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, 5480 S. Kenwood Avenue.

The event will open to the public at 2:00 p.m. (after the judges make their selections). Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded around 3:30 p.m. The event will end at 5:00 p.m. There will be live music and coffee, and some activities for kids.

Contestants are limited to one entry per category but may enter in as many categories as they like. Each entry requires $25 registration fee.

A pie, baked in a 9-inch pie pan with at least one crust, must fit in one of these categories in order to be eligible for entry. Each category will be judged separately:

  • FRUIT – i.e. apple, cherry, peach
  • NUT – i.e. pecan, hazelnut, walnut
  • SWEET POTATO / PUMPKIN
  • CREME – i.e. banana, chocolate, coconut

Each pie will be thoroughly evaluated by professional judges and compared against competitor pies in its entry category based on the following criteria:

  • Overall appearance and visual appeal
  • Crust texture and flavor
  • Filling texture and flavor
  • Overall taste

All proceeds from the event benefit the Hyde Park and Kenwood Hunger Programs.
