University of Chicago’s Campus North Residential Commons Opens
Students will have access to 270-degree views of Lake Michigan.

A new four-building development is now open at The University of Chicago Campus North Residential Commons, located at 5500 S. University Ave.
About 800 students will begin to move into eight “houses," and will have 270-degree views of Lake Michigan, the U. of C. campus and downtown Chicago, according to the Hyde Park Herald.
“We wanted to have a building to clearly reflect the openness to the community of Hyde Park and beyond,” said U. of C. President, Robert Zimmer, in the story.

The four-building development includes retail space, a dining hall, 3,200 units for on-campus housing, a green roof on top of the dining hall and an elevated garden space. The building, designed by Studio Gang, began construction in October of 2014 .
Three retailers have opened for business to students and the public, including Insomnia Cookies, Timbuk2 and Dollop Coffee.
