Yates was a lifelong resident of Lemont, a graduate of Mt. Assisi Academy and a US Peace Corps volunteer. She was an assistant for the Village of Lemont for 26 years. She was Citizen of the Year 2002 and Grand Marshall of the Keepataw Days parade.
"I was so very blessed to work side by side with Rose for so many years," wrote Hope and Friendship Foundation Founder Terri O'Neill-Borders on the organization's Facebook page. "We shared a love for making our corner of the world a better place but truly I was simply a student of the love Rose had for her faith, her family and her community. I told her repeatedly how much I loved and respected her and just wanted to be in her presence making ripples—huge ripples were made by a woman that may have been small in stature but was enormous in her presence and footprint on this corner of our world."
