1st Snow Accumulation: 2 Inches Possible For Some Areas

The Elgin area may see 1 to 2 inches of snow, while Chicago and Joliet are forecast to get less than an inch of snow.

ILLINOIS — Some of the Chicago area could see some minor snow accumulation early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulations will be between 0.5 and 2.5 inches, with the most accumulation near the Rockford area. The Elgin area may see 1 to 2 inches of snow, while Chicago and Joliet are forecast to get less than an inch of snow.

A winter weather advisory has also been issued for the far west and northwest Chicago suburbs, including Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb and Kane counties from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The weather service said accumulations are most likely along/north of Interstate 80 and along/west of I-355. The snow will begin around 3 a.m. and last until 10 a.m., when it will start to change to rain, the NWS said.

According to the weather service, some light accumulation on roads is likely, so drivers should be aware during the Tuesday morning commute.

Data from the weather service shows that the normal first date for measurable snow (0.1 inches or more) is Nov. 17. The normal first date for an inch or more of snow is Dec. 7.
