Lemont Approves Water Main Replacement Projects

One of the approved projects includes the emergency water main replacement at 127th and State streets.

LEMONT, IL — Several water main replacement projects were approved by the Lemont Village Board at its April 12 meeting. The board approved a contract for the Singer Avenue water main replacement, and a contract for an emergency water main replacement at State and 127th streets.

The water main on Singer Avenue will extend from the St. Alphonsus cemetery to Norton Avenue, and then from Custer down to Cass, Public Works Director Ralph Pukula said.

The village received 16 bids on the project, and awarded the contract for the project to the lowest bidder, J Congdon Sewer Service, for a total of $496,516.72. According to board documents, the project includes the installation of an 8-inch water main, as well as pressure connections, hydrants, water service reconnections, and curb, gutter, and sidewalk removal and replacement.

The project came in $120,820.28 below budget, Pukula said.

"It's a great bid, we're looking forward to getting that work done," Pukula said. "Some of this water main over in that area is up to 80 years old, so it is definitely in need."

The board also approved an emergency water main replacement for one of the town's main crossroads at 127th and State Street.

The village had a large water main break at the intersection in August 2020, Pukula said. The water main is 60-65 years old, he added.

"This water main failed and it took us two days to repair the water main, and it was a temporary fix repair," Pukula said, noting that the water main is also the main feed from the nearby water tower.

The village received four bids for the project, and awarded the contract to the lowest bidder, Austin Tyler Construction, Inc., for a total of $178,869.61. The cost came in $21,550.39 below estimated costs, board documents state.

The project will include the installation of 10 and 12-inch water main, including pressure connections, and curb, gutter and sidewalk removal and replacement, board documents state.
