Lemont Changes Name of South Main Street Due To Mail Issues
South Main Street will be renamed Wells Street, in honor of Lemont's first mayor.

LEMONT, IL — South Main Street in Lemont will be renamed to Wells Street, after approval from the Village Board at its Monday meeting. In addition to South Main Street, Lemont also has a Main Street, and the distinction between South Main Street and Main Street was causing confusion and issues with mail delivery, board documents state.
Community Development Manager Mark Herman said village staff reached out to the Lemont Historical Society for recommendations of a new name for the street.
"We're going with Wells Street, and that would be in honor of Joel Wells, who was the first mayor of Lemont," Herman said.

Neither the Lemont Police Department nor Lemont Fire Protection District had an issue with the change, board documents state.
Trustee Rick Sniegowski said he talked to three former local mail carriers, who said this change should've been made a long time ago, and it's been problematic over the years.
