Lemont Chiropractor Retires After 36 Years

LEMONT, IL — After 36 years, Dr. Gary Michalowski of the Lemont Chiropractic Center retired at the end of June. Michalowski called his retirement "bittersweet," but believes he has left his practice in good hands with Dr. Adam Bezanis.

Michalowski told Patch he first started the practice with a partner in 1984, and in 1990, the practice moved over to its current location at 201 Stephen St.

"I really loved treating patients for all those years," the Joliet resident said. After over three decades of practicing chiropractics, Michalowski said his hands gave out.

"I couldn't practice the way I wanted to," he said.

He said he got lucky when Bezanis joined the practice.

"I wanted to make sure I found someone who practice similar to what I do."

Michalowski said he mainly worked on low back and neck problems, and originally wanted to become a doctor. He became an X-ray technician, and said he discovered he really hated the hospital.

"I still wanted to be a doctor, and a friend of mine suggested chiropractics," he said, adding that he had no idea what a chiropractor even was. Michalowski attended the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, and started his practice in 1984.

Michalowski said he is spending his retirement relaxing and working around the house.

"I don't want to spend my whole retirement watching Netflix," he laughed.
