Lemont Extends Permit For Covington Knolls Development

The board approved the final planned unit development in June 2020, but that approval lapses after a year if site development doesn't begin.

LEMONT, IL — The Lemont Village Board extended the special use approval for the final phase of the Covington Knolls neighborhood at the northeast corner of Covington Drive and 127th Street at its Monday board meeting.

The board had approved the final planned unit development in June 2020, but that approval lapses after a year if site development does not begin. The extension of the special use approval allows the developer an additional 12 months to start site development, according to board documents.

The developer, Gallagher and Henry, prefers to delay the start of the project due to "pandemic-related issues," board documents state. The property consists of 7.7 acres at the front of the subdivision off of 127th Street.

"We relayed our desire to Mr. Gallagher to get started sooner rather than later," ‎Economic and Community Development Director Jason Berry said, adding that the village's policy is to allow a 1-year extension to planned unit development approval.

Mayor John Egofske commented on the large dirt pile currently on the vacant land.

"I know, progress, that's what comes with progress," Egofske said. "[But] that's something they need to address between now and starting."

"I would love for them to get up and running," he added. "It's a great seller's market right now."
