Community Mourns Loss Of Stephanie Kufer, Oswego East High School Student

Grief counselors are available for students and staff on campus.

MONTGOMERY, IL – District 308 officials confirmed the death of an Oswego East High School Student, 16-year-old Stephanie Kufer, who passed away unexpectedly in her home Friday, May 12. The Will County Coroner's Office is currently investigating the death, with no cause yet determined, according to the coroner's office.

OEHS and School District 308 said they are joining together in extending deepest heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Kufer.

“Stephanie was described by students and staff as compassionate and sincere. She was thoughtful and caring toward her classmates and was a talented artist and writer. Stephanie was devoted to helping and encouraging those in need. She will be profoundly missed by her friends, teachers, the staff at OEHS and throughout the entire district,” Dr. John Sparlin, Oswego’s Superintendent, said in a statement.

Additionally, Sparlin said there is a crisis counseling team of psychologists and social workers on campus to meet with students and staff throughout the week. He recommends for parents to also consider monitoring their children’s communication and social media to assess potential needs.

Visitation and funeral arrangements are as follows:

Visitation: Wednesday, May 17, at the Dunn Family Funeral Home with Crematory, 1801 South Douglas Road, Oswego, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral service: Thursday, May 18, at the Dunn Family Funeral Home with Crematory, 1801 South Douglas Road, Oswego, at 1 p.m.
