University of Illinois

The University of Illinois, located in Urbana, has one of the largest fitness facilities in the state. On campus, there are a total of 6 different fitness facilities. The “ARC” or Activities and Recreation Center is a total of 340,000 square feet and is filled with state of the art technology, including hundreds of machines and weights, ⅕ mile track, two 50 meter swimming pools, a 35-foot climbing wall and a 35 person sauna, just to name a few things. Then, there is the Campus Recreation Center East, which is 110,000 square ft and home to free weights and machines, racquetball courts, ⅛ mile indoor track and a fully stacked Aquatic Center — leisure pool, water slide, volcano fountain, 12 person sauna and all. Don’t forget about Freer Hall, Complex fields, outdoor center fields, and the Ice Arena. U of I sure has out done themselves. Their students can do group fitness classes, personal training sessions or even stop by the cafe for a healthy snack after their workout.

Illinois State University

Illinois State University, home of the Redbirds, in 2010 built their new Student Fitness Center spanning 180,000 square feet ( 8.73 sq. ft. per student). This facility, otherwise known as “the Rec,” is lined with strength training machines, a 47-foot rock climbing wall, ⅛ mile track, an abundance of fitness classrooms, three sport courts and a 25 yard pool. There are a total of 5 fitness facilities including the Student Fitness Center, Horton Field House, Gregory Street Fields, Redbird Arena, and Hancock Stadium. As a student, you can participate in a variety of group fitness classes, receive one-on-one personal training sessions or enjoy a Jamba Juice on the way out of your workout! Their facilities have even won awards from American School and University magazine, Athletic Business Magazine and Recreation Management Magazine.

DePaul University

DePaul’s Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center is located in Lincoln Park and extends over 123,000 square feet. It contains over 100 cardio machines, 12,000 sq. ft of strength and conditioning machines and a large free weight area. Enjoy basketball, volleyball or badminton in their four-court gymnasium or take a lap around their ⅛ mile track. Try personal training, massage therapy, intramural sports, one of their 65 weekly group fitness classes or even partake in one of their outdoor adventure trips. The possibilities are endless. And who could turn down a massage after a stressful week of classes?
