3 Years After Tragic Crash, Purple Light Tribute Burns Bright

Emily Driscoll died unexpectedly while walking her dog. Three years later, neighbors honor her with a light display.

NAPERVILLE, IL — Neighbors in the Windgate subdivision continue to pay tribute to a neighbor, three years after her tragic death. The subdivision has a memorial for 22-year-old Emily Driscoll, who died Nov. 9, 2014 while out for a walk with her dog, Quincy. She was struck by a car near her neighborhood at the intersection of Book Road and Rickert Drive.

Shortly after her death, an article in the Naperville Sun said one of her neighbors, Jayne Rollins, called the Driscoll residence a "Christmas house." She said the family went all out with holiday lights, drawing in neighbors with kids were eager to see the display.

Windgate residents, including some who never met Emily, agreed to put up purple lights in her honor, as that was her favorite color.

Rollins enlisted the help of more than 50 volunteers from Home Depot, who hung the lights that first year after Emily's death.

This video does the display no justice. Bundle up, fill up a thermos and bring your dog for a drive down Book Road in Naperville's Windgate subdivision.

Those who knew Emily best described her in the Naperville Sun as "bright" and "cheery." Being surrounded by the purple lights gives one a glimpse of what it must have been like to have known her.
