NAPERVILLE, IL — As Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall heads into retirement after 44 years, Deputy Chief Jason Arres has been appointed as the city's interim police chief. Arres was appointed by City Manager Doug Krieger.

Marshall officially retires July 2, which is when Arres will take command of the police force. Arres will serve as interim police chief until the City of Naperville hires someone to permanently replace Marshall after an internal and nationwide search that is expected to last up to 16 weeks.

Mayor Steve Chirico said in a news release that he "fully supports" Arres being appointed as interim chef.

Chirico added, “He has demonstrated his strong character and significant value to the police department and the community time and again.”

Arres, who holds a master's degree in public safety administration, also graduated from the FBI National Academy, the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety and the International Association of Chiefs of Police's Leadership in Police Organizations school.

Arres signed on with Naperville Police Department as a patrol officer in 2001. In his 20 years with the force, he has served as a detective, an undercover detective, an administrative sergeant and a patrol and professional standards commander, in addition to filling other roles. Arres was promoted to deputy chief in 2017.

Arres said he was "humbled and honored" to be named interim police chief, according to a news release. He added that he will benefit from Marshall's longtime influence.

"Having worked for, and learned from, Chief Marshall for many years, I am confident I am up to the task of maintaining operations and helping this department continue to thrive after the Chief’s well-earned retirement," Arres said.

In a statement, Marshall praised Arres as having the "highest integrity, solid communication skills, and a clear understanding of the critical policing issues impacting our community."

Marshall said, "With his leadership skills and his knowledge of both the City and the Department, Deputy Chief Arres is well positioned to lead [the Naperville Police Department now and into the future."
