During the shooting, a person with a valid Illinois Concealed Carry license fired their gun at Portillo, according to Naperville police. Gunfire also hit a nearby car with a person in it, but that person was not harmed.

“The allegations that Mr. Portillo opened fire on a Saturday afternoon in an extremely well-traveled and crowded shopping district are outrageous,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release about the charges.

Berlin continued, “The type of brazen and violent behavior alleged in this case has an adverse effect on the safety and security enjoyed by the entire community and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Naperville Police Department Chief Robert Marshall added, "This dangerous crime involving a series of gunshots was rather unusual for the City of Naperville. It was extremely fortunate no innocent bystanders were injured as a result of the criminal actions that day."

Portillo is set to appear in court again June 21.
