Celebrating Earth Week Naperville in 2020
Naperville Park District offers ideas, resources for individuals, households

April 22, 2020 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. While plans to mark this anniversary have changed due to the coronavirus outbreak, Naperville Park District has resources available to help individuals in the community support Earth Day and share what they are doing.
For the past three years, Naperville Park District has collaborated with other organizations to promote Earth Week Naperville—a community-wide initiative that included volunteer projects to beautify the environment, educational sessions, an Earth Day Fair, and more. This year, the Earth Week webpage available at www.napervilleparks.org/earthweek still is a valuable resource with event updates, information and suggested activities.
While organized spring volunteer opportunities are on hold, residents are encouraged to support Earth Day by collecting litter in their neighborhoods and nearby areas, as long as appropriate social distancing measures are followed. Participants can then share a statement and/or photo to the Naperville Park District’s Facebook or Instagram pages showing what they have done to celebrate Earth Day by using the hashtag #earthweeknaperville.

Residents also may find ideas for enjoying and exploring nature at the Naperville Park District’s new webpage, https://www.napervilleparks.org/naperparks2you in the Nature category and there is a special category for Earth Week activities that you can do at home, including ideas such as making a bird feeder, fixing a leaky faucet, or lowering the temperature of your hot water heater.
Additionally, the Park District posts updates explaining its environmental initiatives at www.napervilleparks.org/greeninitiatives. The most recent Sustainability Report is posted on this page, showing progress in the areas of purchasing; effective use and protection of air, water, soil and wildlife; effective use of energy resources; reduction and handling of waste, and environmental education and interpretation.
