District 204 Drops Driver's Ed as a Requirement After Civil Rights Complaint

The complaint says the requirement is discriminatory to some disabled students.

NAPERVILLE, IL — A civil rights complained has resulted in Indian Prairie School District 204 no longer requiring driver’s ed to graduate.

The complaint says the requirement is discriminatory to students “with vision, physical and intellectual disabilities and even some with severe learning disabilities,” according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.

School board member Justin Karubas suggested reviewing the district’s graduation requirements.

“You want to have high graduation requirements for rigor purposes, but you also want to have flexibility with the elective side," Karubas told the paper.
