Female Veteran Of WWII, Korea and Vietnam Passes At 101 In Lisle

She was a regular at the Naperville Memorial Day parade and a veteran of the Navy Nurse Corps

Retired Navy Commander Margaret Rose Ruppert died at the age of 101 in Lisle last month, according to the Daily Herald.

Ruppert trained at Great Lakes Naval Station, north of Chicago, in World War Two. She joined the Navy Nurse corps, and she served at naval installations across the country and on two ships.

During the Korean War, she served on an unescorted transport ship that transited mined waters to evacuate wounded Marines from North Korea. Ruppert served on an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War.

"The family was very proud of her military service and how she rose through the ranks,"her great nephew, Steve Grobl told the Daily Herald. "We thought of her as a pioneer."

After 30 years of service, Ruppert retired in 1975. She moved to Lisle in 2008 and was featured in Naperville's annual Memorial Day parade.

Services were held in Naperville and she was buried in her hometown of Pinkneyville.
