Grant E. Moy: 1931-2020

CHICAGO, IL —Grant E. Moy, 88, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on June 14, 2020 in Chicago, IL.

Grant was born in China in 1931 to You Wan Moy and Moy Ng Tei. He was a beloved brother to Anna, Dorothy, Forrest, Walter, and Mark. When he was only six years old, he came to America where his father had immigrated. Due to the Chinese Exclusion Act, he took on the “paper son” name of Grant Eng. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force during World War II and at 24 years old, married his young bride, Celvia K. Moy.

Grant and Celvia settled in Chicago, IL where they raised their three children, Barton (Joanie), Diane (David), and Alice (Craig). In Chicago, he worked as a waiter at Trader Vic’s and saved up enough money in tips to buy their first home and the Chinese restaurant, “Good Earth,” which they owned for over 25 years.

Grant was most proud of his children and eight grandchildren (Christopher, Sarah, Rachel, Kasey, Joseph, Anne, Sela, and Matthew). He was often seen on the sidelines of many of their games or as an audience member for many performances.

We will always remember Grant’s contagious smile and twinkle in his eyes, his love of the arts, and his positive, generous spirit. We are reassured knowing he’s reunited with God in Heaven.

A private family memorial will be held at the Lake Forest Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his grandson, Christopher.
