Man Pleads Guilty To Bombing Egg Harbor During Naperville Looting

Diego Vargas has signed a plea agreement and will appear in court for sentencing on Sept. 2.

NAPERVILLE, IL — Diego Vargas, the man accused of using an explosive device to damage the Egg Harbor Cafe during last year's looting in downtown Naperville, has pleaded guilty to federal charges.

Vargas, 26, also admitted to hitting an Aurora ATM with a baseball bat in an attempt to forcefully steal money, according to the Northern District State's Attorney's Office.

A plea agreement details the incident that occurred on June 1. Vargas said he picked up a street pole and threw it through the window of the cafe before tossing a lit explosive device through the broken window, causing two explosions, according to prosecutors.

The night before, Vargas said he and two others also conspired to steal money from an ATM outside of First Midwest Bank in Aurora, prosecutors said.

The charge of maliciously attempting to damage and destroy a building by means of an explosive device carries a minimum sentence of five years in federal prison, with a maximum of 20.

Vargas will appear in court for sentencing on Sept. 2.

A total of 11 people were arrested in the immediate aftermath of the June looting, which damaged 30 stores throughout downtown Naperville.
