Naperville Water Bills May Increase Slightly

Water bills would increase 3 percent every year through 2021

The Naperville City Council is considering a 3 percent increase in water fees through 2021, according to the Naperville Sun. The increase would balance the water utility budget and pay for upgrades at the Springbrook wastewater treatment center.

Naperville's water utility is currently operating at a deficit. Additionally, new Environmental Protection Agency regulations limit the amount of phosphorus that the wastewater treatment center can put into the DuPage River. Excessive phosphorus can increase algae growth, reducing oxygen in the river and negatively impacting aquatic life.

The city council vote on the proposal in April. The increased fees would begin in May. The average household monthly water bill would rise from $65.07 to $77.63 in 2021. Small business would see their average bill increase from $415 to $534, and the average bill for large business would go from $2,499 to $3,089.
