Naperville Water Main Breaks 'A Lot' For One Season

The 32 water main breaks are due to extremely cold temperatures & lack of insulating snow.

NAPERVILLE, IL — Thirty-two water main breaks in Naperville have occurred as a result of this winter's extremely cold temperatures, according to the Naperville Sun. The most heavily hit days were Dec. 28 and Dec. 2, with four breaks on each day.

The Sun reported that Naperville has assigned some of the emergency repairs to Western Utility, and will cost $50,000. Jim Holzapfel, director of Naperville's water utility, told the Sun that breaks do happen in the summer, but mostly in the winter. This season, he said the breaks have been "a lot for us in a short period of time."

Since snow insulates the ground, the lack of snow has made for unfavorable conditions this season. Holzapfel also told the Sun that although the main breaks were distributed throughout the city, most were in older neighborhoods built between the 1950s and 1970s. A fifth of that $50,000 will go toward one more emergency fix this winter if it's needed. The emergency procurement was approved Dec. 29.
