NAPERVILLE, IL — A Plainfield man is being held on $1 million bond after prosecutors say he shot his girlfriend's brother in the abdomen in what police called a "targeted" domestic shooting in the 2700 block of Sheridan Court in Naperville just before 2 p.m. Friday.

Prosecutors say a woman called 911 Friday afternoon saying her brother had been shot. Officers who arrived at the Sheridan Court home found the victim lying on his back in the front doorway with a gunshot wound to his left abdomen. Police initially told reporters the man had been shot in the chest. He was immediately taken to an area hospital.

Investigators believe that prior to the shooting, 23-year-old Andrew Durham was arguing with the victim outside the home. Prosecutors say that the argument turned violent, and Durham pulled a gun and shot the other man before fleeing.

Police say witnesses at the scene gave them Durham's name and a description of his vehicle. The car was soon spotted and stopped in Plainfield near 119th Street and Route 59. After a "brief high-speed chase," Durham was pulled over and taken into custody near 135th Street and Route 59 in Plainfield, according to police and prosecutors.

A search warrant was issued, and police recovered a 9 mm pistol from Durham's car late Friday, prosecutors said. He is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Durham, of the 5400 block of Dale Drive, which has a Plainfield mailing address, appeared Saturday in DuPage County Court, where his bond was set at $1 million. He would need to post $100,000 to be released.

Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall expressed relief that the incident "did not lead to a senseless tragedy" and praised police for finding and arresting Durham within 30 minutes of the shooting. Marshall thanked Plainfield police for helping apprehend Durham.

"Armed violence, as alleged in this case, has no place in our society and will be met with the full force and effect of the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement Saturday. "Thankfully, the victim is expected to survive his injuries. I commend the Naperville Police Department for their quick response and apprehension of the defendant in this case, and I thank the Plainfield Police Department for their assistance. I would like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Misura for her efforts in preparing a strong case against Mr. Durham."
