Signing Off: Retired Chief Robert Marshall Makes Last Radio Call

NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall made a moving last radio call as he headed into retirement July 2 after 44 years with the city's police force.

A police officer typically makes a 10-42 call at the end of their tour of duty when they are signing off for the day. Marshall's July sign-off began with him announcing his badge number and his intention to end his tour of service.

He said, "ADAM-151, 10-42."

A dispatcher responded with, "Attention all Naperville units: We have a special announcement. Dear, Chief Marshall —you may have known him as "ADAM-151"— the department wishes you the very best as your career draws to a close. You've done so much for the city of Naperville, the Naperville Police Department, the community and your coworkers. This concludes the Marshall era here in Naperville. Thank you for your 44 years of dedicated service. Good luck, Chief, and Godspeed."

The announcement was followed by other members of the police department offering their congratulations to Marshall.

A retirement celebration for Marshall was held June 30 at Naperville Municipal Center. Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and other local officials showed up to give their well wishes to the outgoing chief.

Naperville city officials will begin an internal and nationwide search for someone to take up the mantle from Marshall, a process that could last up to 16 weeks. In the meantime, Deputy Chief Jason Arres has been appointed as the interim chief of the Naperville Police Department.
