Tornado Tore Through 16 Miles From Naperville To Willow Springs

The June 20 twister spanned 600 yards and reached wind speeds of 140 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

NAPERVILLE, IL — Sunday's EF-3 tornado spanned 600 yards and wreaked havoc over more than 16 miles of land from Naperville to Willow Springs, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported Tuesday afternoon.

The twister started near Plainfield-Naperville Road and Sheppey Court just after 11 p.m. and ramped up in intensity as it made its way east of Naper Boulevard. NWS says the tornado peaked in intensity, reaching wind speeds of 140 mph near the 1800 block of Princeton Circle, where it leveled a home.

More than 230 homes were damaged as the tornado continued east, ripping off the walls of houses and the roofs of apartment buildings near Woodridge Drive and Basswood Lane.

NWS reports that the tornado narrowed and decreased in intensity after it made its way into southern Darien and Burr Ridge, crossing I-55. The tornado then swept across the Des Plaines River before dissipating near Buffalo Woods in Willow Springs.

Injuries from the tornado hospitalized 11 people in Woodridge and Naperville. As of Tuesday evening, no deaths have been reported in connection with the twister.

Another, smaller tornado touched down between Plainfield and Romeoville.

Tornado relief efforts were in full force throughout Tuesday, with hundreds of volunteers donating time, money and food in the midst of the ongoing cleanup efforts. As of Tuesday evening, parts of two Naperville streets were still closed as crews worked to remove downed power lines.
