Basketball player inducted posthumously in Hall of Fame

Posthumously, basketball player Shane O'Donoghue was inducted in the Moraine Valley Community College 2020 Athletics Hall of Fame.

Posthumously, basketball player Shane O’Donoghue was inducted in the Moraine Valley Community College 2020 Athletics Hall of Fame in February along with four athletes and a coach.

O’Donoghue was a guard on the men’s basketball team from 1998 to 2000. His freshman year, he led the team in scoring and assists, and was named Most Valuable Player in the NJCAA Region IV tournament and at Moraine Valley. He also was named to the All-Region, All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and All-Region IV Tournament teams. He helped that team go 27-11 overall and finish fourth in the NJCAA Division II championship. During his sophomore year, he was named to the All-Tournament, All-Conference and All-Region teams. He also topped the college’s records for best free-throw percentage (86.5%) and ranked second for the most career assists (509). After Moraine Valley, he continued playing ball at Assumption College, where he continued earning honors before playing one season professionally in Austria.

“As his coach at the time, I called him Shane the Shocker for his performance on the court. He was a great athlete and person, who is truly missed. It was my pleasure to induct him along with this impressive group in our Hall of Fame,” said Bill Finn, Athletics director. “These inductions affirm that Moraine Valley and the south suburbs of Chicago are rich in athletic tradition and talented high-level athletes.”
