Palos Park Police Sport Pink in Support of Teammate

Breast cancer awareness is a focus for local police—as is honoring a two-time survivor among them.

PALOS PARK, IL — Palos Park police will sport a little extra color with their blue in coming weeks.

Officers will wear pink patches and hats to raise awareness of breast cancer and support one of their own—Officer Deb Legatzke, who has battled breast cancer twice.

Legatzke is now healthy and strong and keeps physically active, police said.

"Pink will mix with blue as police officers in Palos Park don pink to patches and hats to raise awareness of breast cancer and various groups working to find a cure for the disease," said Police Commissioner Dan Polk in an email Monday. "We want to show our support in recognition of this devastating disease."

The gesture is especially touching as Legatzke is set to retire soon.

Palos Park Police said the goal for this year is to let the pink patches help start a conversation about breast cancer.
