PALOS HILLS, IL – The Hickory Hills Sertoma Club has donated $3,500 to the Kiwanis Club to help support residents who were displaced after a fire on Christmas Day.

Members of the Sertoma Club recently presented the donation to Mayor Jerry Bennett and Kiwanis member Mike Lebarre with the goal of providing assistance to the 56 people who were affected by the fire at an apartment-condominium building.

The fire is believed to have started in the laundry room in the multi-unit building in the 9900 block of 84th Terrace, according to news reports.

Chief Paul Mackin, of the North Palos Fire Protection District, said fire crews arrived at the Green Tree Condos at 2:50 a.m. Dec. 25. The blaze was elevated to a 2-alarm fire and finally extinguished at 4:30 a.m.

The entire 40-unit building — built in 1972 — has been deemed uninhabitable by the Palos Hills building commissioner. Four units are totaled, others sustained heavy smoke damage, the fire district chief said.
