Southland Offers Concerts, Shows To Get You In The Holiday Mood

Colleges, churches and civic groups throughout the south suburbs offer a smorgasbord of concerts and performances to enrich your holidays.

Looking for some local entertainment to get you in the holiday mood? There are plenty of concerts and performances to enrich your holidays offered on the South Side and south suburbs, from chorales and ensembles to singalongs and percussion spectaculars. Many of the performances are free or charge a nominal admission rivaling downtown Chicago shows in talent. Know of an event you think we should include? Chamber Music Recital

About: Trinity Christian College’s Brass Quintet and Chamber Music Ensemble will perform at the Chamber Music Recital.

Percussion Holiday Spectacular

About: Moraine Valley Percussion Ensemble celebrates their 15th anniversary season with three dynamic, high-energy performances featuring music styles performed on marimbas, vibraphones, xylophones, drum set, timpani, bongos, congas, trash cans, cookware, cowbells and much more. Learn more.

Tea Time Concert Early Music for the Holidays

About: The University of Chicago’s weekly Tea Time series features the Early Music Ensemble performing music selections of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music for the holidays.

When: Complimentary tea and cookies served at 4:15 p.m.; music begins at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5.

Where: Fulton Hall, University of Chicago, 5845 S. Ellis Ave., Chicago

Cost: Free

South Suburban College Holiday Performance

About: South Suburban College’s Symphonic Band, PAC Rats Theatre Company and SSC Voices will perform holiday favorites.

Where: Kindig Performing Arts Center, South Suburban College, 15800 S. State St. South Holland.

When: 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.

Cost: Free, but free will donations benefiting the SSC Music Scholarship Fund are welcome.

Wheaton College Christmas Festival

About: This year’s Christmas festival features the Wheaton College Choirs and Symphonic Band. Community members welcome.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6; and 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

Where: Edman Memorial Chapel, northeast corner of Washington and Franklin Streets, Wheaton.

Cost: $18. Purchase tickets online or by calling 630-752-5010. Tickets wll go on sale one hour before each show begins at the box office.

Merry Christmas Music

About: The Moraine Chorale and Chamber Singers continues their 22nd season with an evening of “Merry Christmas Music,” The group features the vocals of community members and Moraine Valley students. Bring your car keys and jingle along with “Jingle Bells.”

When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7

Where: Dorothy Menker Theater, Fine and Performing Arts Center, Moraine Valley Community College, 9001 College Parkway, Palos Hills.

Cost: General public, $15; $12 MVCC staff and seniors: $10 children and students with ID. Buy tickets online.

Christmas Spectacular - SXU

About: Saint Xavier University’s Music Department will present an extravaganza of holiday music featuring students from all the university’s performing ensembles.

When: 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8

Where: Music Performance Space, Warde Academic Center, Saint Xavier University, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

Cost: General admission, $6; seniors and military, $5; free for all SXU students, faculty and staff with current ID, and free to prospective students. Buy tickets at the door.

Holiday Concert - Tinley Park Community Band

About: Established in 1987, the Tinley Park Community Band draws musicians age 14 and older. The concert band, directed by Barbara Abarro, will perform holiday favorites.

When: 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8

Where: Art Beckmann Performing Arts Center, Central Middle School, 18146 S. Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park.

Michael Teolis Singers

About: The Oak Park-based Michael Teolis Singers are a 30-voice ensemble who’ll perform such Christmas classics as Gloria Noel, Alleluia, Angel Alleluias, Pastorale and Ava Maria, as well as audience favorite Carol of the Bells. Comprised of singers from the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana, the Michael Teolis Singers put their own unique special brand on treasured holiday songs.

When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14

Where: Incarnation Catholic Parish, 5757 W. 127th St., Crestwood

Cost: $10. Students free with ID. Tickets sold at the door or in advance at the parish office.

Windham Hill Winter Solstice

About: Windham Hill marks the 35th anniversary of its multi-platinum Winter Solstice. The concert features original and traditional acoustic music by Grammy-winning guitarist Will Ackerman, Grammy-nominated singer, fiddler, pianist and songwriter Barbara Higbie, and composer Todd Boston, with special guest cellist Mia Pixley. The group honors all traditions by playing new arrangements of classic holiday tunes in solo and ensemble performances.

When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14

Where: Dorothy Menker Theater, Fine and Performing Arts Center, Moraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills.

Cost: $30, general admission; $25 for seniors; and free for children and students with ID. Those qualifying for free admission must acquire a ticket to reserve a seat. Purchase/reserve tickets online.
