It's officially been two years since the Cyclone men's tennis team was able to compete. Now, they're more than ready to play.
It’s officially been two years since the Cyclone men’s tennis team was able to compete. This spring, they are more than ready to get back on the court.
In spring 2020, the Cyclones were preparing for a full competitive season before it was abruptly ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They didn’t have a chance to get in one match. Since then, the Cyclones saw Assistant Coach Mike Maratea become the head coach and the team returned just one player, who when last was able to compete with his team in 2019, went to the national championship.
“The most important thing is that we’re competing and having a season. We’re very lucky, so whatever comes next is nice,” Maratea said. “They’ve been really excited at practice. They wanted to get out there and do something during the pandemic. Now we’ll go out and get it done.”

David Souza (Eisenhower) is the lone returner and will provide stability and solid leadership. Some newcomers who will play as top seeds include, Ali Amer (Reavis) and Yianni Livieratos (Sandburg). James Coan (Reavis), Edwin Esparza Hernandez (Eisenhower), Lucas Skowyra (Stagg) and Jakub Zolnik (Shepard) also will get to compete in their first complete season with the Cyclones.
Although there are new faces and new lineups to configure, Maratea is feeling favorable toward this crew and aiming for a championship. “The team is looking good. I’m excited about the depth, which is a little better than some of my earlier teams here. We have a lot of balance and a good mix of players. Everyone will play, all seven. That will help with the emotional aspect. There’s a lot to be said about the team concept. Our goal is to win the regional title and do it with balance and contributions from everyone,” Maratea explained. “We’ll play hard. Moraine Valley men’s tennis is used to winning, and Coach Maratea likes to win. We’re excited and ready to go.”

The Cyclones open the season at home on Wednesday, March 31, 2:45 p.m., against Illinois Valley Community College. Up to 50 spectators are allowed at outdoor sporting events. To view the schedule, visit mvcyclones.com.
