Letter to the Editor
This letter offers a unique perspective on youth football from a parent about being a referee.

As a parent of three boys, I want to share what Park Ridge football has meant to my family. All three boys played Park Ridge football and enjoyed it very much. In 6th grade, my oldest son was approached about being a football ref. He had never considered it, but decided to give it a try. It turned out to be an awesome experience. My two younger sons eventually followed in his footsteps.
Reffing taught them how to interact and communicate with adults. I have been told many times by other adults how impressed they are with how my sons act around them. They give them firm handshakes, and look them in the eye when talking to them. I firmly believe reffing gave them the confidence to interact with adults.
Reffing also taught them to make decisions and stand by them, even when they might not be the most popular. Many times I have seen my boys make calls coaches didn’t agree with, but they had no problem explaining the calls, and not backing down.

I was also impressed with how Park Ridge football administrators treated the refs. They were always there to back them up, and help them in any way they can. My sons still look up to them, and I found them be great role models.
Playing football provided my kids with great experiences, but I also believe reffing has played a big part in the young men they have become.
