Maine Township LIHEAP Assistance Program Is Underway

"We look forward to assisting those who qualify," said Austin Kelso, Maine Township Director of General Assistance.

LIHEAP season for the year 2020 has arrived at Maine Township! On October 7 registration opened to all senior and disabled individuals, announces Austin Kelso, Director of General Assistance at Maine Township. LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Program) is an energy assistance program.

Families with a child or children under the age of six years old can begin to apply in November. December registration will be open to the general public. Kelso says, “Come to the Township office located at 1700 Ballard Rd., Park Ridge for help with energy assistance this season. We look forward to assisting those who qualify.”

Through LIHEAP, those in need can receive a one-time grant on their electric and gas bills. Appointments can be made through May 2020 or until funds run out. This is also a great opportunity to inquire about other services. Call 847-297-2510 X-236 or come in person to make an appointment.

Kelso noted that Maine Township’s General Assistance also provides aid to single people or married couples without children who are in good health and available for work, as well as those who are awaiting Social Security Disability, unemployment benefits or aid from State of Illinois Department of Human Services Programs. Ready to step in to alleviate life-threatening circumstances, General Assistance also helps people become self-sufficient, he added.

General Assistance services include the Emergency Food Pantry, Energy Assistance, Access to Care, a program that helps low income and uninsured individuals have access to health care; and MaineLines, a subsidized taxicab service. In its advocacy role, it helps residents with applications for food stamps, medical and financial assistance and also helps seniors, disabled persons and veterans access services they may need in a variety of areas.
