Pedestrian Killed After Being Hit By Metra Train In Park Ridge

A 25-year-old man who died after he was struck by an outbound train early Friday has been identified.

PARK RIDGE, IL — The man person struck and killed by a Metra train early Friday morning in Park Ridge has been identified as 25-year-old Joseph A. Portanova. He had walked onto the tracks between crossings near the Park Ridge-Chicago border shortly after midnight when he was hit by an outbound train, according to a Metra representative.

Portanova's last known address was in Queens, New York, said spokesperson Meg Reile, although a vehicle found nearby was registered to family members with an address in the Chicago area.

Park Ridge police said the incident occurred near the 400 block of Summit Avenue, Pioneer Press reported. That's across the tracks from Rotary Park and about a block west of the border with the Edison Park neighborhood. Metra police are leading the investigation, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner has not issued a ruling as to the cause of death. The train and 200 passengers aboard were delayed for about two hours during an investigation, as crews needed to be relieved, Reile said.
