As most area schools return to virtual learning and hybrid learning models to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions, Joliet Montessori School has released their reopening plan for the 2020-21 school year that features full-time return to classrooms for the school’s students who range from Pre-K to 9th grade.

School is in session August 20

Head of School Heidi Geiger says she worked with the JMS Board of Trustees and consulted with experts from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Illinois State Board of Education and others to create a smart, safe return to in-person schooling for students and staff alike on Thursday, August 20.

“JMS is in a unique position to adapt to the strict new guidance from state and federal authorities,” Heidi says. “Montessori education is built on an establishment of mutual respect among children, and our learning method has always included large, open classrooms and lots of outdoor time. The reopening plan reveals how easily the Montessori method adapts to social distancing, general hygiene and cleanliness, and the freedom to pursue individualized curriculums.”

The JMS reopening plan details how the school’s environment will meet or exceed requirements, not only in the state of Illinois’ current Phase 4 state, but also in the event that Illinois returns to Phase 3 in the future.

Tawnie Cisneros, current president of the JMS Board of Trustees and mother of a fifth grader, says, “I knew in-person learning was the right choice for my son, but I needed it to happen in a safe environment. This plan strikes the right balance of keeping our kids safe and giving them the room to learn and play like they need to. JMS families, including mine, have shared feedback that we have total confidence in our teachers and administrators, and we are excited to get back to school.”

The reopening plan also details how JMS will continue to offer their highly popular before- and after-school care program, observing the same guidelines and practices.

JMS is still accepting applications for this school year for students from 3 to 15 years old. To learn more about JMS, visit the school’s site or check them out on Facebook for the latest developments, including the reopening on August 20.
